ZECHARIAH'S
PROPHECY
OF JESUS

Z E C H A R I A H
CHAPTER 9

Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem!

See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the war-horses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken.

He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth.

MATTHEW 21

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, tell him that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”

This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:

“Say to the Daughter of Zion,
‘See, your king comes to you,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ”

JOHN 12

The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting,
“Hosanna!”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Blessed is the King of Israel!”

Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written,

“Do not be afraid,
O Daughter of Zion;
see, your king is coming,
seated on a donkey’s colt.”

At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that they had done these things to him.

A grand finale for the OT. I especially like the carvings at #22-29-30. Infinite thanks for this thread, Dan!

Infinite! You are expansive this morning, Alba.

Since the entire OT points to Jesus, it’s fitting to conclude its coverage, I think, with His grand entrance.

These make me think what it must have been like to be there.

The use of bright colors symbolize the joy, the almost overwhelming joy that was felt, and several of the artists had foreshadowing ;

- the Roman soldier in colorful #3
- #4's color, and looong perspective
- #5 yes color, but notice the use of black-cloked (KJV spelling) 4shadowing (4sh).
- #27 - prominent black 4sh
- #28, obvious 4sh!
- #6 Dore...That's Dore? Wow. Great colors, but Jesus is in a dark cloke.
#10, Tissot, you can almost hear the Hosanna's!
- 4sh in #11, 21, & 24
- # 16 ...colors!!

I think the use of contrast is so appropriate, given that we know...the artists knew what was to happen, but still, the bright colors with no contrast pieces make me think the artists just wanted to focus on the joy of the moment...

That's Dore? Wow. Great colors

Often, I stumble upon colored Dorés, and I assume some unknown percentage of them were colorized by admirers.

the artists just wanted to focus on the joy of the moment...

If they didn't, they missed the point, eh?

I know Turchi (#28) also painted under the name "L'Orretto" and one other name.

But he did not paint (at least as far as I can find) under the name "Pedro Orrente", (re: #5).

Unless the name "Orrente" has been translated to "L'Orrento".

With the exception of the cherubim, they are remarkably similar.

What am I missing?

Good Morning Dan, and good morning to each visitor here. Every contribution is appreciated.

Great Choices here; quite a variety of surprises. Much love #31 JEAN-LÉON GÉRÔME; he was a very gifted artist indeed. Many talented sculptors in France during that time.

Thank you much Dan!

It’s been a pleasure reading your posts every morning, Dan.
I have to go back and start from the beginning to see what I’ve missed.
Do you have any new projects in the works?

Did you visit the two sources, by clicking on the titles?

This is a Scripture series, not an art history. Generally, therefore, I am uninterested in laboring over artists' biographical details, leaving that entirely to knowledgeable aficionados such as you and the three others I pinged; indeed, routinely I ignore qualifiers like "from the circle of" and "from the workshop of" and simply list the artist. Instead, I am content to provide any readily available indication from the source, and if none is apparent I settle happily for anonymity without bothering to search. Were it not for the consternation among viewers that inevitably would result, I could without compunction omit all attributions entirely.

Meanwhile, adequately illustrating the text is my focus exclusively.

This lengthy response is all out of proportion to your innocuous inquiry, Sonny, but I am merely using this occasion to state my policy.

I am not exaggerating, Leon, when I claim that Gérôme's statue took my breath away. To me, it is spectacular!

Um, the New Testament? After a brief hiatus, which I will trumpet tomorrow.

You know, Pete, after our extensive conversation yesterday, it occurs to me to provide you with the following outline of the entire Bible:

OLD TESTAMENT (Genesis thru Malachi): JESUS IS COMING!

THE 4 GOSPELS (Matthew through John):  JESUS IS HERE!

NEW TESTAMENT (Acts thru Revelation):  JESUS IS RETURNING!

Thanks Dan! I actually did a little reading last night from the Book of Wisdom.
But what you wrote is a great guide for me.
Have a great day!
